Sustainability at Sigr: A Matter of Principle
At Sigr, minimising our environmental impact isn’t a marketing tactic—it’s simply the right thing to do. As of 2024, 100% of our new production uses recycled fabrics, marking a significant milestone in our sustainability journey. From the Ocean Jersey in 2019, which used recycled materials from discarded fishing nets, to now integrating recycled polyester, nylon, and elastane across our entire range, we’re committed to using what’s already here.
Why Recycled?
Using recycled fabrics helps conserve energy, reduces emissions, and lessens the dependence on virgin resources. It’s a step towards a circular economy, where gear is made to be reused, repaired, and ultimately recycled again. It’s not about being perfect—it's about doing the best we can.
Setting the Standard for Recycled Fabrics
The introduction of the Ocean Jersey in 2019 marked the beginning of our commitment to using high-quality recycled materials. This approach allowed us to maintain performance and durability standards while reducing our environmental footprint.
Our recycling initiatives go beyond garments. We incorporate recycled paper for packaging and support local efforts to clean up cycling routes, reinforcing our aim to have a broader impact. By 2024, we transitioned to using 100% recycled fabrics for all new production, collaborating closely with suppliers and overcoming challenges in material availability.
Carbon Capture Initiatives
To further offset our carbon footprint, Sigr supports innovative carbon capture and reforestation efforts:
-
Partnership with Climeworks
We contribute to Climeworks, a pioneer in Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology. Unlike traditional methods that focus on reducing emissions, DAC actively removes CO₂ from the atmosphere and safely stores it underground through mineralisation, essentially turning CO₂ into stone. It’s a permanent solution that complements our ongoing reduction efforts. -
Commitment to Carbon Neutrality with Mast Reforestation
We’ve partnered with Mast Reforestation to help rebuild forests that have been damaged by wildfires. Mast plants native trees that are specifically chosen to thrive in each region, ensuring healthy forest ecosystems that can sequester carbon over the long term. -
Ongoing Collaborations and Pioneering Partnerships
Sigr’s collaboration with innovative carbon capture initiatives reflects our belief in supporting solutions that can scale globally. Every purchase from our collection contributes to these projects, helping to advance cutting-edge climate technology.
Mulesing-Free Merino Wool
Merino wool is a natural performance fabric, but its production hasn’t always prioritised animal welfare. Traditional mulesing, a surgical procedure to prevent flystrike in sheep, can cause significant pain and distress. At Sigr, we choose only certified mulesing-free merino wool, ensuring that no sheep endure unnecessary suffering for our garments. This certification means we support humane treatment from farm to fabric.
Sustainable Design: Timeless and Responsible
Creating garments that stand the test of time is central to Sigr’s design philosophy. We believe that well-made products shouldn’t be reinvented every season. By focusing on timeless and long-lasting styles, we help minimise the need for overproduction and excessive consumption, which saves valuable resources.
We also take responsibility for recycling in the EU through the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program, ensuring that all our packaging can be properly recycled at the end of their life cycle.
It’s not just about making less; it’s about making it matter.
Packaging: Recyclable and Responsible
Our packaging is as good as 100% recyclable. We use recycled paper and cardboard for shipping, and we avoid unnecessary plastic wherever possible. It’s a small step, but it’s part of our broader commitment to sustainability.
Our Philosophy
We believe in honest, incremental progress. Our focus is on producing high-quality, long-lasting gear that doesn’t need constant replacing. Transparency is at the heart of everything we do, and we’ll continue to share both our successes and challenges along the way.
