How Sigr Supports Climate Focused Innovation
Nature has always influenced the way we design and create at Sigr. From colours inspired by Nordic landscapes to the simple idea of riding outdoors, the natural world shapes the products we make.
As an online business, we work with partners who explore new approaches to measuring and understanding shipping related emissions. Through Shopify’s climate initiatives, a portion of our revenue is directed to companies developing carbon removal technology.
These companies operate independently, and their work has been evaluated by scientific advisors from Carbon Direct.
Through Shopify’s programme, participating businesses have:
- Contributed funding that helps support research and development in carbon removal technology
- Supported the delivery of millions of orders with estimated emissions calculated through Shopify’s system
Here is how the system works: Shopify estimates the emissions associated with each order’s shipping. A portion of revenue from participating brands, including Sigr, is then directed to carbon removal companies selected by Shopify. These companies use the funding to advance their technology or processes. Any additional funds support the further development of carbon removal methods. Sigr is not involved in the operation of these technologies.
A look at some of the companies supported through Shopify’s programme
Heirloom
Heirloom works on direct air capture technology that accelerates the natural process of mineralisation. Their approach involves increasing the speed at which certain minerals absorb CO₂ from ambient air.
Remora
Remora develops technology designed to capture CO₂ from the exhaust streams of heavy duty vehicles. The captured material is later transferred for storage or processing by third parties.
Charm
Charm works with plant based waste, converting it into a carbon rich liquid that is delivered to licensed facilities for long term storage underground.
