Vättern is a lake.
It's a massive lake.
The second most huge lake in Sweden in fact. Longer than the distance from central London to Dover.
With a circumference of roughly 642 km, it's a big hairy target for cyclists of all shapes, sizes, ages and abilities.
Vätternrundan is a yearly cycling event which comprises many rides of varying distances. There are road races from 100 km to 300 km and even a kids race for budding Bradley Wiggins wannabes. There is also a sprint race, the Vättern GP for elite road cyclists which takes place in the core of the city. If you are interested, the rides run from the 7th to the 15th of June. A veritable feast of cycling to be had! Read more here.
One of the intrepid teams taking part is Team Sockersöta - heroes gathered from the four corners of the earth to battle their way around Vättern as fast as possible.
Team Sockersöta (Sugar Sweet in English) is a bit different from most cycling teams. Some of them have diabetes, others have diabetic children and every team member knows someone with the disease. They are passionate about physical excercise and want to show the world that diabetics CAN take part in hard physical training.
We asked them what their main goal in taking part in Vätterrundan is? Their team captain Niklas Revelj's says - "Our most important goal is to raise awareness for diabetes, a disease that is with you for life. We also want to raise money for the unique organisation "Sockertoppen" which is a camp where diabetic children can meet up and have fun and learn together. This year we have several teams cycling for diabetes which is great. We all share a passion for cycling and have become friends for life which lifts the experience to a whole new level for us."
Sigr is very proud to sponsor the team with clothing and cheers along the way.
We could be heroes
The other team on the Sigr radar is our very own Team Sigr who will be hunkering down in the sub 8 group, looking to complete the 300 km ride in under 8 hours! THAT IS FAST!!!
Both of our teams will have a simple but effective kit for the race. Our Pro Bibs, a Sigr PINK cap, our Blåklocka (women, men) or our Luktärt jersey (women, men) and one of our new Treriksröset pack jackets (women, men) hopefully never needing to be taken out of the jersey back pocket. Well, we can always hope!
