Cycling Sock Commandments & Don't Upset The Queen.

Cycling Sock Commandments & Don't Upset The Queen.

To cut a long story short - Sigr has cycling socks under control. ;)

Our new socks follow the rules of both the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) and the Velominati and have also got the thumbs up from our Sigr friends.

Did we hear "Shut up and take me to the socks!"?

If we heard right then you can find men's cycling socks here and women's cycling socks here.

If you still have concerns or maybe just a 🔥 burning 🔥 interest in cycling sock rules, please carry on reading for some hot info on how we did our homework about the perfect colour, length and quality of a sock.

Who in the name of all that is holy are the Velominati and why should I care?

The "Velominati" or "the Keepers of the Cog" may sound like an ancient order of cycling Knights, imbued with holy righteousness straight from the magic legs of cycling legend Fausto Coppi, who congregate around a round (wheel shaped) table once every seven years in a dusty cellar stronghold in the Italian hills.

This is all true of course but tells only half the story. The Velominati were founded by the main authors Frank Strack (Seattle), Brett Kennedy (New Zealand), Gianni Andrews (Hawaii), Marko Carlson (Minnesota), and Jim Thomson (Seattle).

Their site, Velominati receives over two million views per month. Here they reign as sole custodians of the "95 rules of cycling". Socks are mentioned in rules 17, 27 and 28. Cutting to the chase, rule 28 pretty much nails it - "Socks can be any damn colour you like". Our first socks come in uncontroversial yet style friendly black and white. They will match any kit you may have.

Surely knee high socks are OK?

According to the UCI supreme court sock ruling of 2019, it is "illegal" to wear any socks that pass the shin’s halfway point. While it may sound a little draconian, they haven’t (yet) dictated a particular colour. Perhaps that’s something to roll out in 2021, but until then, team colours will reign.

Exhibit A.

We abide by Velominiati rule 28.

"White is old school cool. Black is cool too, but were given a bad image by a Texan whose were too long. If you feel you must go colored, make sure they damn well match your kit. Tip: DeFeet Wool-E-Ators rule."

Is it actually Illegal to cycle sockless?

No. Only the fashion police will chase you.

Be very careful though when cycling around Buckingham palace. While checking the legalities of sockless cycling we came upon an ancient British law stating that it is illegal to be sockless when closer than 100 yards to the Queen.

Don't say we didn't warn you. 😉
