The first race was organised by the "Petit Journal" newspaper way back in 1891. The newspaper's owner Pierre Giffard was keen to show as many people as possible how awesome the bicycle was. Although the large majority of the over 200 entrants rode bicycles, there were actually 10 tricycles and two tandems! The winner of the first race rode without sleeping for 71 hours 22 minutes.
Many years earlier, somewhere in Sweden, there was a man fighting his own fight against ageism. Forged from the strongest Swedish steel, smelted from rock broken by giants in the frozen Northland, Gustaf Håkansson would not take no for an answer. Donning his zero race number along with a rather impressive beard, he cycled the length of Sweden faster than people half his age. This was in 1951. Read about a revolution started by a cyclist in his 60s called "Stålfarfar". He made it possible for Team Happy to start in 2018! #Sigr #SigrRevolution #Sverigeloppet
2018 is historical from an international cycling race point of view. Never before has a cycling race had mixed teams. Finally, women and men together! This is the first year that women have ever been in their saddles next to the men at the starting line and that is something that we at Sigr firmly stand behind. Let's do Sverigeloppet together!
